The development and design of a new Iceland bank note or bill, is finished. The 10 thousand ISK bill will be initiated this year, probably this spring. The first bills will come to Iceland this spring, around the same time as the Eurasian golden plover, a common bird in Iceland that will appear somewhere on the bill.
According to preliminary figures for January 2013 the value of exported goods amounted to ISK 55,800 million fob and the value of imported goods amounted to nearly ISK 44,200 million fob. Thus, there was a trade surplus of ISK 11,600 million ($90m, €67m) in January 2013, according to the preliminary figures, calculated on fob value.
The OMXI6 stock index has risen quite fast in 2013 and the stock market has been lively. The stock index has risen 7.3% this year, as a comparison the stock index rose roughly 16% all last year. The turnover has been around 1.5 billion ISK each day on average in 2013.
According to a new estimate by the International Monetary Fund, IMF, it is expected that if the British and the Dutch sue Iceland, and claim compensation, it will be expensive for the Icelandic government no matter how the ruling goes. A ruling in the Icesave dispute will take place on January 28th. If the result in unfavorable to Iceland, the British and the Dutch can build on that ruling, sue the Icelandic government and claim compensation for contract violation by Iceland.
The OMX 6 stock price index has risen 4.25% in the past week. The turnover for the past three days has been over three billion ISK (around 20 million euros). Today the stock price of the Faroe Islands bank, Bank Nordik, has risen the most or 3.47%. Icelandair Group has risen 0.47% today.
In November 2012, 132 new private limited companies were registered compared with 165 in November 2011. The largest number of new registrations was in Real estate activities and Financial and insurance activities. In the first 11 months 1,605 new private limited companies were registered, which is about 3% increase compared with the same period in 2011.
Statistics Iceland has released a new issue of the Statistical Series, containing results from the continuous household expenditure survey 2009–2011. The results are broken down by type of household, residence, quartiles of disposable income and quartiles of total expenditures. The results are compared with the results from the 2008–2010 household expenditure survey.
