The young man was born in 1992 and he will be 21 years old this year. He got acquainted with Julian Assange in 2010 and he wanted to help Wikileaks and become a volunteer.
The hacked pretended that he had a position high up in Wikileaks and that he was a close coworker of Assange. Recently it was said that the boy had been supervising staff related matters at the company and some photos of the boy and Assange seem to back that up.
A spokesperson at Wikileaks said that the boy wanted a photo with himself and Assange, just like many other volunteers at the organization.
"We are talking about a young Icelander who helped a bit at the organization for a few months period in 2011, and he came to England and met Julian Assange and others at the organization but that was popular among volunteers at that time" said Mr. Kristinn Hrafnsson, Wikileaks spokesperson.
Mr. Hrafnsson said that what the young man was working on was fund raising for the organization, for example selling T-shirts. Later it was discovered that the funds were never sent to the Wikileaks account.
"Later he used deception and forgery to get the money into his personal account instead of the organizations account. Under the conditions at the time he was offered to repay the money over a few months period. When the money never came the matter was reported to the police, probably in March or April last year. The matter is still with the police." said Mr. Hrafnsson.
It is believed that he has stolen 30.000 - 35.000 EUR from the organization. The fraud office at the Icelandic police in Reykjavik is investigating the matter related to Wikileaks but the man has not been charged officially. According to the sources of an Icelandic TV station (Stöð 2) the young man has often been involved with fraud and theft in the past.
"This man does not seem to be well, and the fraud and theft might have been done because of some illness" said Mr. Hrafnsson about the young man.
