Iceland Writers Retreat launches inaugural event

Iceland Writers Retreat launches inaugural event featuring Susan Orlean and Geraldine Brooks.

- First ever international writers retreat to be held in Iceland, land of the sagas

- Team of international writers leading small-group workshops includes Pulitzer-prize winner Geraldine Brooks and New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean

- Unique cultural program includes events led by Reykjavik, UNESCO City of Literature, the only non-native English speaking such city in the world

Founders Eliza Reid and Erica J. Green announce the launch of the Iceland Writers Retreat. From 9-13 April,2014 published and aspiring book writers in the fields of fiction and non-fiction will come to Reykjavik to participate in a series of workshops and panels led by esteemed international authors. Participants will work on developing their writing, explore the famed sites of the Reykjavik region, and learn about Iceland’s rich literary tradition. Registration is open to all.

The theme of this inaugural event is books focused on the subjects of travel and journeys. The confirmed workshop leaders include Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks (US / Australia), New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean (US), Man Booker Prize nominee James Scudamore (UK), travel writer Sara Wheeler (UK), Scotiabank Giller Prize winner Joseph Boyden (Canada), National Geographic Traveler Digital Nomad Andrew Evans (US), Ryerson University professor and author Randy Boyagoda (Canada), and award-winning memoirist Iain Reid (Canada). The event will be held in English.

The retreat will be sold as a package (excluding airfare) and the delegate fee will include accommodation at the four-star Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura, all workshops, conference materials, several exclusive tours, receptions with local dignitaries, and most meals. There will also be a separate partners’ fee for those who wish to be accompanied.

Pulitzer Prize winning writer Geraldine Brooks commented: “I’m looking forward to visiting the wild land of the sagas (ideally from the saddle of an Icelandic pony), learning about Iceland’s rich literary tradition and meeting contemporary Icelandic writers.”

Kristín Vidarsdóttir, from Reykjavik UNESCO City of Literaturecommented: "We are thrilled that this event will bring writers to a land where more books are read and published per capita than most other countries in the world."

Iceland Writers Retreat is sponsored by Icelandair and Icelandair Hotels. Reykjavik UNESCO City of Literature, the Icelandic Literature Center, The Icelandic Ministry of Science, Education, and Culture, Visit Reykjavik, US Embassy Iceland, and Meet in Reykjavik have endorsed this event.
