Iceland authorized secret CIA flights

Icelandic authorities gave CIA permission to bring extraordinary rendition through Iceland from 2001-2007. Iceland was one of 54 countries that authorized those flights through their airspace, according to a new report from the human rights organization OSJI (Open Society Justice Initiative).

No more footwear scanning in Iceland

Airport security in Iceland's international airport,  Keflavik International Airport, will no longer require passengers to take off their shoes at security checkpoints. The mandatory footwear scanning has been going on there for years, even though most airports in Europe just check shoes randomly and in the USA children and senior citizens are exempt from the screening.

The most active airlines in Iceland

548 scheduled flights were flown from Iceland's Keflavik International airport last month.

The traffic through Keflavik International airport decreased about 5% from November to December. Seven airlines ran scheduled flights and, as usual, Icelandair was responsible for the majority of them. This summer Icelandair ran about 65% of scheduled flights from Keflavik.

Sandy far from Eyjafjallajokull's record

Over 20 thousand flights were cancelled because of hurricane Sandy last year. That's nothing compared to the amount of flights that were cancelled because of Eyjafjallajökull in spring 2010.

Almost 2.4 million passengers travelled to and from Keflavik International Airport last year, an almost 13% increase from 2011. This is way more increase percentage wise than any other big airport in Scandinavia had.

Iceland's Keflavik International Airport the best small airport

Iceland's Keflavik International Airport has been voted the best small airport in Europe in 2011 by participants of an extensive airport service survey by Airports Council International. Keflavik Airport received the same award in for the year 2009. The comprehensive survey is published quarterly and annually with 140 major airports worldwide taking part, 48 of which are in Europe.

Wi-Fi on board planes to Iceland this summer

As we reported HERE, 16 airlines will fly to Iceland this coming summer. It now looks like at least four of those will offer in-flight wireless internet (wi-fi) aboard their planes.

Four years ago, Iceland's International Keflavík Airport was voted the Best airport in Europe and in 2011 it was voted the Best small airport in Europe. This year, KEF Airport did not make it to the top three, but got 4th place.

Punctual Airlines in Iceland

Over the last months, Icelandic airlines punctuality has been excellent. The airplanes almost always take off on time, but occasionally arrive slightly late.

A total of 45,800 visitors left Iceland through Keflavik International airport this past April, 8,100 more than April last year. The increase in visitors between years was 21% and April 2013 was the busiest April ever, when it comes to foreign visitors in Iceland.
