Editor at News of Iceland, Einar Árnason, was driving in the Westfjords of Iceland yesterday when a snowslide fell onto the mountain road and closed it completely - or so it looked. The Westfjords are known for harsh weather conditions and some of the worst mountain roads in the country.
An earthquake of 4.1 in magnitude was measured at 10:49 this morning. Its origin was 16 km north-west of Eldeyjarboði on the Reykjanes ridge, 67 km south-west of the Reykjanes peninsula. The earthquake was felt both in Reykjanes and Reykjavík.
One of the best known environment journalists in the world says that Icelanders should not seek oil in the Dragon Zone. That would be an important and remarkable contribution by Iceland towards fighting climate changes.
36 year old record cold for May in Iceland has been broken. In Grímsstaðir á Fjöllum the temperature was measured 17.6°C below zero (0.32°F) a couple of days ago. The old record was -17.4°C in Möðrudalur á Fjöllum. The Icelandic Meteorological Office predicts continuing cold, especially in the north of Iceland.
Two Icelanders were saved from a burning boat in Finnmark, Norway around 7 pm last night. The men were sailing a speed boat close to the coast of Sørøya.
This past April was the coldest in Reykjavík since the year 2000 and the coldest in Akureyri since 1990.
General elections take place in Iceland today, Saturday 27th of April 2013. The elections are somewhat historical as the first left wing government in Iceland steps down after 4 years in government. Recent polls show great decrease in support for those two parties.
The Norwegian software company, Opera, has planned to greatly increase its business with Advania, a data center in Iceland, this fall. The energy demand is similar to what a community of 3000 people would need.
The weather in Reykjavik today, April 24th, has been really special. When everybody woke up this morning it was snowing a lot and everything white, but later today the weahter was beautiful and all the snow gone. The following photos were taken early this morning and just before 4pm today.
There was an avalanche in North Iceland tonight. It happened between Dalvik village and Olafsfjordur village. One person has been taken to the hospital, according to the police at Akureyri city. The person was skiing in the mountain but he or she is not considered to be seriously injured, according to the police.
