This is the first time that Iceland receives refugees from this group of people specifically. The Queer Refugees are an especially sensitive group of people which have to face persecution and human right violations in their home countries and are also in danger of being persecuted in whatever countries they first apply for asylum in.
It is planned for the refugees to come here as soon as possible and preparations are already underway.
Iceland has previously received refugees through the 'Women at Risk' project.
Mayor of Reykjavík, Jón Gnarr, has fought for the rights of gay and transgender people for years. He even wanted to reconsider the friendship between Reykjavík and Moscow because of violations against queer people. Read more about that HERE and HERE.
