Population in the Faroe Islands is decreasing steadily. Many think that's the biggest social problem of the islands. Over the last 4 years, 300 fewer people have moved to the Islands than from them. And the Faroe Islands only have a population of less than 48,000 people. If nothing is done, it is predicted that they will be only 42,000 in 30 years and 37,000 in 40 years. But Mayor of Reykjavík, Jon Gnarr, has a solution.

Mayor of Reykjavik meets 'The Wire' director

The Polish director Agnieszka Holland will attend the display of her movie In Darkness, in Iceland on September 28th. A special lighting display will be used for blind and those with poor vision. The display is part of the project "Iceland and Poland for access to culture".

Jon Gnarr, the mayor of Reykjavik, is running for parliament for the party Bright Future (Icelandic: Björt Framtíð). He is in 5th place on the list of candidates for the Reykjavik-North constituency. According to recent polls the party has around 8 - 9% support, enough to pass the 5% election threshold, but not enough to get Jon Gnarr elected.

Wants to get to know other neighborhoods

Jon Gnarr, Mayor of Reykjavik, is known to be unorthodox and willing to experiment with almost anything. This time he has decided to move the Mayor's office, his secretary and other assistants, to a neighborhood pretty far from the center of Reykjavik. The purpose of it all, as his office announced, is to get to know the extensive operation that the City runs in Breiðholt, the highest populated neighborhood in Reykjavik.

The Mayor of Reykjavik, Jon Gnarr, says that he will not give up until he gets his name legally recognized as a family name. His birth name is Jón Gunnar Kristinsson but he legally changed his name in 2005 to Jón Gnarr Kristinsson.

Mr. Jon Gnarr, the mayor of Reykjavik, said at a city board meeting yesterday that he likes hash joints. He was talking about his visit to Denver, Colorado, which is Reykjavik's sister city. Mr. Gnarr talked favorably about the joints and said that they enhanced job creation.
