First openly gay prime minister in the world quits politics

Johanna Sigurdardottir quits politics Johanna Sigurdardottir quits politics

Reykjavik, Iceland - April 26th. -- Johanna Sigurdardottir, the prime minister of Iceland, quits politics today. She is the first openly gay prime minister in the world and her government has done many improvements on human rights issues during this term. General elections will be held in Iceland tomorrow, April 27th.

Today the director and the staff of the organization Samtökin '78 handed the prime minister a rainbow-flower-bouquet as a token of gratitude for the pioneering work as the first openly gay minister in the world.

Samtökin '78 is the Icelandic Lesbian and Gay organisation. It provides counselling, social gatherings, holds dances and is a member of the Reykjavík pride parade committee.

Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir (born in 1942) has been an MP since 1978, she was Iceland's Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security from 1987–1994 and 2007–2009. She has been a member of the Althing (Iceland's parliament) for Reykjavík constituencies since 1978, winning re-election on eight successive occasions. She became Iceland's first female Prime Minister and the world's first openly lesbian head of government on 1 February 2009.

Jóhanna is a social democrat and Iceland's longest-serving member of Parliament. In 2009, Forbes listed her among the 100 Most Powerful Women in the world. In September 2012, Jóhanna announced she would not seek re-election and would instead retire from politics.
