Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, the president of Iceland, has a birthday today and becomes 70 years old. Olafur was elected as the fifth president of Iceland in 1996. He began his fifth term last summer. Olafur will celebrate his birthday with his family today.

The president of Iceland has called Sigmundur David, chairman of the Progressive Party, to a meeting at the presidents residence at 11:30 GMT today. It is extremely likely that the president will give Sigmundur the mandate to form a new government.

Johanna Sigurdardottir, the prime minister of Iceland, met with Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, the president of Iceland, today. The current government did not get reelected so Johanna requested that her government would be relieved. The president asked that the government would stay until the new government has been formed.

The presidential office of Iceland has pardoned 45 sentenced individuals since 1996, the year when the current president took office. A total of 122 people were pardoned from 1980 to 1995. A total of 513 applications for pardoning have been submitted since 1993 and thereof 54 were accepted. 432 applicants were male and 81 were female.

The President of Iceland is the country's head of state and the only representative chosen by the entire electorate in a direct election. The office of President was established in the Constitution of the Republic of Iceland which took effect on 17 June 1944. The fifth President of the Republic is Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. He was elected in 1996, assuming office on 1 August that year. He was re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2008 and in 2012.
