Icelandic Premier League: It pays way more to supervise men's games than women's

A football referee in the Icelandic Men's (Pepsi) Premier League gets paid ISK 39,450 ($340, €260) for each game in the city but only ISK 15,400 ($133, €101) for supervising a women's game.

A referee in the female premier league therefore has to supervise 2.5 games to receive the same payoff as for one in the male league. The salary in the men's league is 156% higher than in the women's league.

"The requirements are just higher in the men's league", says Þórir Hákonarson, CEO of The Football Association of Iceland. He went on: "One can also contemplate the men's football players salaries compared to the women's. That's a similar case".

The same rules apply in both leagues, men's and women's, the same number of players, the same time length of games and equal need for a good referee, whether it is a men's or woman's football game.

Heavy discussion has arisen in Iceland about the matter and other gender inequality in the society.
