The old Icelandic Half Iron Man record was by Steinn Guðmundsson, about 4 hours and 23 minutes. Stefán finished today in 4 hours 16 minutes and 42 seconds.
What is Half Iron Man
Half Iron Man is a shorter course of the Iron Man triathlon. It consists of a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. Stefán swam in 28 minutes and 28 seconds, biked 90 km in 2 hours 25 minutes and 33 seconds and finally ran the half marathon in 1 hours 19 minutes and 39 seconds. The run is obviously his strong suit but he is constantly improving in the other two challenges. The man who won the competition this time in Lisbon was a professional who finished about 20 minutes before Stefán.
To face a Medicine Final Exam in 5 days
Stefán trains 10 times a week and each workout is 1-5 hours. He swims most mornings at 6 o'clock. But he is also on his last year in his medicine studies and will take the final exam in 5 days. This did not affect his decision to compete in the Half Iron Man though. "It's alls about organizing. You need the discipline that you learn from doing sports to make this all work out", Stefán told mbl.is.
The Lisbon track is one of the fasted tracks there is and that also helped. Seven other Icelanders competed in the Half Iron Man today and all of them did quite well. Conditions were nice, hardly any wind and 25°C (77°F).
Stefán is registered to compete in a full Iron Man competition this summer in Klagenfurt, Austria. His goal is to beat that Icelandic record too.
