She won the 800m running event at the world championship for 17 year old's and younger last week in Donetsk in Ukraine and is therefore the world champion in her age category. This happened on Sunday July 14th.
Her time was 2:01,13 minutes and she finished competing at the IAAF world championship last weekend. She is the first Icelander to become a world champion in athletics.
6 days later, last Saturday, July 16th, Anita won the 800 meter race at the European Athletics Junior Championships (U19) in Rieti, Italy and became European champion. Her time then was 2:01,14. It's especially great that she (17 years old) won the U-19 championship. She will be able to compete in the same category for 2 more years.
Most successful Icelandic Athlete
Anita is without a doubt the most successful Icelandic athlete to date and Icelanders as well as the athletics community have high hopes for Anita. Her coach, Gunnar Páll Jóakimsson says they are looking at competing in the adult European Championships next year.
Anita qualified for the adult World Championship in Moscow which takes place this August, but decided to focus on these two junior championships, which she won last week.
No Icelander has won these Athletics competitions and it looks like Anita is the most promising athlete in Icelandic history.
