Educational personnel who have completed some pedagogical education was more than one-half (54%) of all educational personnel in pre-primary schools in December 2012. At the same time 19,615 children attended pre-primary schools, more than ever before in Iceland.
Icelanders have a goal to beat the former tweet record this week as the Eurovision Song Contest takes place. The old record is 18 thousand tweets from the Icelandic "boladagur".
The XIII Nordic TAG – Nordic Theoretical Archaeology Group was held at the University of Iceland in April. The Nordic TAG is a highly distinguished and established discussion forum of theoretical debate in archaeology, cultural heritage management, material culture studies and other related disciplines.
The 25th Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics (25-SCL), organized under the auspices of the Nordic Association of Linguists (NAL), will take place at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík, May 13-15, 2013. The conference venue is the Main Building (Aðalbygging) on the university campus (see picture above).
Statistics Iceland has created Android app which enables users to access the booklet Iceland in figures on smartphones and tablet PCs for key figures on Iceland. This is the first time Statistics Iceland disseminates statistics in this format, but the app was released in 2012.
The Honduran Ambassador to Iceland, Roberto Flores Bermúdes, came to Iceland in March to present his letter credence to the President of Iceland. Whilst in Iceland Mr Bermúdes, expressed his wishes to visit the University of Iceland; where he held a meeting with Kristín Ingólfsdóttir Rector.
The University of Iceland recently reported that the European Language Resources Association (ELRA) announced at the beginning of March that the next Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC) will be held in Iceland 26 May to 1 June 2014. The LREC conference is held biannually and is the largest conference on language resources in the world – with around 1200 participants on average.
A lot more women gratuate from universities in Iceland than men. For the school year 2009-2010 around 1200 women graduated but only around 660 men. A total of 1003 women graduated from high schools during that same school year, but only 856 men.
The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) recently released a report on the Information Society and published the IDI Development Index (information and technology development index). Iceland ranks number four on the index.
Google reported recently that their navigation system, Google Navigation, will be offered in some new countries. So far it has only been offered in big European countries and North America, but the newest update will include some smaller countries, including Iceland. The navigation system is still not working in Iceland but is expected to kick in soon.
