Among participants in the symposium were Members of Parliament, specialists, leaders from the public and private sectors, public officials and members of the press; reflecting the increasing importance of the Artic area. Issues concerning the Arctic are currently an important factor forIcelandic - Finnish collaboration as well asall the Nordic countries.
Furthermore, the symposium revealed great interest in increasing this collaboration even further; as well as taking into consideration the perils and challenges associated with global warming, the melting of the Arctic ice and potential utilisation of natural resources in the Arctic area. The Finnish President announced in his speech that the Finnish government would introduce a new policy in matters of the Arctic in the near future with emphasis on three factors: safety, stability and sustainability.
