The construction of a 130 room hotel has begun in the town Hella, South Iceland. The football player Hreiðar Hermannson, who is the CEO of Stracta konstruktion, signed a lease for the land last week. It is estimated that the hotel will be ready before May 1st 2014.

In June 2013, overnight stays in hotels were 239,800 compared to 208,400 in June 2012. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 88% of the total number of overnight stays in June and increased by 17% compared with June 2012. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 5%.

In May 2013, overnight stays in hotels were 161,300 compared to 139,600 in May 2012. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 79% of the total number of overnight stays in May and increased by 14% compared with May 2012. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 21%.

The total number of overnight stays was 3.7 million in the year 2012, which is an 15.1% increase compared with the year 2011. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 77% of the total number of overnight stays and increased by 18%. At the same time overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 6%. From 2011 to 2012 the number of overnight stays increased in all types of accommodation establishments except for sleeping-bag facilities and lodges in the wilderness.
