The summer (June, July and August) is the far most popular time to visit Iceland. May and September are also becoming widely popular. The fact is that many hotels are fully booked through most of the popular months. The south coast of Iceland is particularly popular.
The total number of overnight stays was 3.7 million in the year 2012, which is an 15.1% increase compared with the year 2011. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 77% of the total number of overnight stays and increased by 18%. At the same time overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 6%. From 2011 to 2012 the number of overnight stays increased in all types of accommodation establishments except for sleeping-bag facilities and lodges in the wilderness.
Icelandic Farm Holidays has secured the prestigious EarthCheck Gold level of certification from EarthCheck.org. EarthCheck works with environmental certification and benchmarking, using a science-based approach.
The number of overnight stays in Iceland last February were 139.900, which is a 35% increase compared to February last year. Foreign visitors count for 82% of these overnight stays, and overnight stays by foreign visitors increased by 42% compared to least year. Overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 11%.
In January 2013, overnight stays in hotels were 90,300 compared to 72,300 in January 2012.
Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 83% of the total number of overnight stays in January and increased by 28% compared with January 2012. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 13%.
In December 2012, guest nights in hotels were 88,700 compared with 69,300 in December 2011. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 78% of total guest nights in December and increased by 30% compared with December 2011. At the same time national guest nights increased by 21%.
Hali country hotel is a nice place for accommodation when traveling to the southeast corner of Iceland. Hali is very close to the famous glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon and is perfect for travelers who are going to see the lagoon.
In October 2012, guest nights in hotels were 140,500 compared with 117,200 in October 2011.
Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 79% of total guest nights in October and increased by 23% compared with October 2011. At the same time national guest nights increased by 10%.
The Icelandic government has decided to increase the VAT on hotels and guesthouses from 7% to 14% in 2013, in September. This change is estimated to increase the governments income by 550 million ISK, around 3.2 million EUR.
Iceland has plenty of campsites but the prices and services provided vary
There are about 200 campsites in Iceland. Before one goes camping in Iceland there are many things to consider, such as price and facilities. Tjalda.is, a website about camping and campsites in Iceland and they have come up with a grading system where the users grade the campsites. We can see that the cheapest campsite is only 400 ISK (2,5 EUR, 3.1 USD) per adult and free for children.
