Yesterday was therefore the biggest day this summer in regard to the number of tourists visiting the city. Over a 100 busses along with smaller vehicles were used to transport the passengers on excursions all over.
Two of the most popular excursions are the Golden Circle (Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hotspring and Thingvellir national park) and the Blue Lagoon.
How much money do they leave in Iceland?
It's hard to estimate how much money the tourists leave in Iceland but a research from 2010 showed that tourists on day trips spent around ISK 12,500 each. According to that, the tourists yesterday spent around ISK 82 million ($646,000; €500,000). Most of that money goes to the tour companies though and not a whole lot to stores and restaurants in the city.
