Guide rescued a woman at Reynisfjara coast

An Icelandic guide rescued a female tourist as her life was in danger at Reynisfjara beach in the south of Iceland. A huge wave almost caught the woman and could have easily sucked her out to the cold Atlantic ocean. The guide says that the area needs warning signs.

The guide, Ingolfur Bruun reports to mbl.is that the incident took place last Friday around 1:30 pm. "The waves were huge, as good as they get. Huge and powerful", says Ingolfur who was guiding a group of five around the beach. A short while later, a group of four more tourists arrived, on their own.

Lost and Wet

He was talking to his group, when they pointed over his shoulder. He turned around and saw this woman, from the other group, lying on the beach. "It was obvious that the sea had gotten to her. She was lying flat on the beach so I ran to save her".

If it wouldn't have been for Ingolfur's quick reaction something terrible could have happened as the currents at the beach were very strong. The woman was unharmed and continued her journey in Iceland, thankful for the rescue.

Went too close to the sea

This is a dangerous place and two deaths have occurred at the beach. People should be very careful and it can never hurt to have a guide along with you. Sometimes there is a set of smaller waves, so people tend to go too close, then all of a sudden a huge wave can cover the beach and the cliffs.

Warning signs are expected to be installed sooner than later.
