Icelandic professional snowboarding legend, Halldór Helgason, could guarantee himself a spot at the Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia by doing well today in Canada. He will compete in Slopestyle against many of the best snowboarders in the world later today.
Slopestyle is a type of winter sporting event where the goal is to perform the most difficult tricks while getting the highest amplitude off of jumps, with an emphasis on performing different types of tricks instead of doing one great trick repeatedly. It originated as a snowboarding competition format, but there are now many sports that are considered to have this style of competition, of which skiing and snowboarding are two of the most common.
Slopestyle is one of the most popular events at the Winter X Games. It will become an Olympic event, in both skiing and snowboarding forms, at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The Olympics start on February 6th.
"This is not gonna be easy, but I hope he will make it", said Eirikur Helgason, Halldor's brother.
Halldor will also compete in this years X-games, which he won in 2010. His jumps from 2010 can be seen in the video below.
