A man died after an ice climbing accident in Iceland today

A man was ice-climbing along with a guide in an ice-cave on Vatnajokull glacier today. The man fell down the cave and rescue teams were alerted. Forty rescue workers assisted with getting the man from the cave under very difficult circumstances, but the police in the area has confirmed that the man has died. A helicopter was also scrambled.

The man was German and in his fifties. The accident is being investigated by the police. The fall down the cave is around 10-12 meters, and the man was around 200 meters inside the cave. Rescue workers therefore had to walk around 200 meters into the cave, and walk through water up to the waist at times.

One of the glacier guides assisted with the rescue, along with two other tourists. The other guide went to get help.
