Fee Collection at Geysir Geothermal Area Illegal Featured

The District Court of South Iceland has ruled that the fee collection at Geysir geothermal area was and is illegal. Landowners are expected to stop collecting fees immediately. The Geysir area is visited by up to 6000 people every day.

Landowners of the Geysir area have been charging entrance fee to the area for the past weeks and have been harshly criticized by tour guides and companies, MP's and many other.

The government states that the land within the fenced area is owned by the state. The government therefore considers it unlawful for the landowners to make a unilateral decision about implementing a fee.
